Disconnected - A 48 hour VR Trip
DISCONNECTED is a performance in the year of Big VR. Thorsten S. Wiedemann (founder and director of A MAZE. ) is VRNaut, leaving behind reality for the radical duration of 48 hours. No human being has ever spent such a long time in computer generated Virtual Reality.

10 years later.

It is now the year 2026. People spend much of their time in Virtual Reality (VR) for entertainment, education, training, enjoying themselves in thousands of digital worlds. New art-forms and ways of storytelling have prevailed. It is normal that you jump into VR to meet your international friends in Social VR Rooms and go on crazy adventures together. You visit locations you'd never dreamt of, learn languages and cooking skills in authentic environments.

Everyone has their consumer glasses at home, good enough for low interaction, and small world experiences. But if you want real embodiment in digital worlds you must visit the legal and illegal VRCenters in order to book your personalised VR experience. These trips are curated by VRShamans, skilled people who monitor your reactions and health and bring you back safely after your journey. The journeys themselves depend on personal preferences and can last for a day or even a week.

DISCONNECTED will give you a taste of this future. Sara Lisa Vogl (VR Designer/ Lucid Trips/ VR Stammtisch) and first VRShaman will create daily routines filled with interactions in virtual worlds. The line-up and the list of worlds will be released online after Thorsten disconnects.

Put a videogame where it is not supposed to be
I am part of the french game collective called One Life Remains. 6 years ago, we started to show videogames where they were not supposed to be, which means a lot of places : art centers, libraries, music festivals. It changed the nature of videogames we made : it became installations with destructible or gigantic gamepads, videomapping, laser pointers. But showcasing your work in this kind of place offers another opportunity : you can create different versions of the same game. This talk will be about La Discipline du Rectangle, a game created firstly created for the A MAZE Pop up at Clujotronic (Romania), and currently exhibited in 7 different versions at La Fondation du Doute, Blois, France.

Challenge the default
This talk highlights the kind of typical games developed by default humans and asks indie developers who want to make a difference to dig deeper and ask themselves what diversity really means for them. I will portray and challenge the status quo of the game development industry, and present a number of smaller game concepts tailored to the audience of South-African game developers, giving them concrete ideas on how to think out of the box and challenge the default of the kind of games we make, the people who make them, and the ones we make them for.

Echoes and Heartbeats - Creative Inspiration and Inspired Creation through Games
Imagine a song as an echo of someone's heartbeat, frozen in time, replicated, distributed, and sometimes forgotten, until the moment a listener hits "play". The echo escapes through speakers or headphones, enters the listener, where it will continue to bounce around, long after the song has stopped playing.

Now imagine that, years later, The Listener writes and records their own song. Their own heartbeat's echo. Unique, and new, but in some way shaped by the all the echos that entered The Listener before. With the most listened to and loved songs, leaving behind the most powerful echoes, The Listener's new song carries with it tiny echos from a hundred prior-creators.

And so it goes. On and on and on.

***

Shaped by own experiences, playing in bands, releasing music and throwing parties in Johannesburg, and creating stuff in Cape Town's alt-game-dev-family, "Echos and Heartbeats" will be a celebration of inspiration.

Considering the possibilities for "creative echos" to to transcend mediums (a photograph could inspire a song, inspiring a comic book, inspiring a game), I'll be looking at how the creations of others become catalysts and fuel, igniting our artistic passion and keeping it burning.

In an era of constant global remixing of content, I'd like to pay some special attention on the current relationship between game developers and let's players. In "looping" the echos of the games they play, and adding their own commentary, music, edits or graphics, Let's Players the world over are pioneering a new form of remixed art. On the flip side, game developers can see their own work take on new forms as it's echoed back at them, going on to create new works, influenced by the video collages of gamers they've never met.

I hope to examine the possibilities for inspirational loops between game creators and let's players. To this end, I'll be reflecting on the experiences of my game band, Team Lazerbeam, seeing our games echoed online, and then making games informed by those echoes.

8bit inspiration - how an early love of videogames kickstarted my animation career
Gonna be talking about how I got into the animation industry in South Africa, and how a love of old-school videogames and Lucasarts adventure games got me my first animation experience, and how that's led on to me creating pilots with Nickelodeon and Disney, animated Goldfish music videos and other cool pixel art projects, and also want to chat about how these two worlds overlap for me quite a bit, and chat about creating pixel art animation.
